Julie

Warm, Effective English Tutor; Over 3000 Hours of Diverse Experience

Hello! I was a Master's candidate at Teachers College, Columbia University and I have a multidisciplinary degree from Case-Western Reserve University. During my years at Case-Western Reserve, I was a paid tutor in the Resident Tutor Program, a federal program which provided group and individual tutoring to public school students. It was a joy to watch those children progress from struggling and, sometimes, apathetic students, to students who became not only eager to come to class, but als...

violin

I have played violin for over 50 years and have extensive experience playing in public with orchestras and chamber groups, and as a solo violinist. I was the Concert Mistress for the Missouri State Orchestra and was invited to audition for the St. Louis Philharmonic when I was in high school.) (I took a different direction in my schooling, so did not accept this offer.) In addition to my knowledge of the technical aspects of violin playing, I am patient and understand the process of developing musical feeling and skills.

She has such amazing ways to make things easier to understand and I'm happy to have her as my English tutor.

Julie has been working with my son for several months now, and his writing and comprehension skills have grown tremendously. Julie is a very thorough tutor, she will make sure that he completely understands and comprehends the lesson before moving on, no matter how long it takes him. I also appreciate her lesson reviews that I receive from her, because as a parent we all know that we don't always get all the information from our children and this allows me to know exactly what they are reviewing. I highly recommend Julie to anyone who is looking for a tutor for their child in these areas!

3/12/2014 We've had 3 lessons so far with Julie. My son was not so receptive to the idea of having a reading tutor and let her know it by not paying attention. However, Julie was so patient to get him to open up. She asked many questions to figure out what my son's interests were and they started to talk about Minecraft and was slowly able to gain more trust and confidence. I'm excited to see that he's opening up more to Julie (thanks to Julie's clever approach!!!). Julie is also great at providing detailed, meaningful lesson reviews so the parents can understand the successes and challenges and discuss with the child in preparation for the next lesson. THANK YOU Julie!!! Updated review: 10/21/14 My son has been meeting with Julie for about 8 months. His reading comprehension skills are improving and is getting better at breaking down the questions to help him how to reference back to the story to answer the questions. She's also been helping him out to write a story; frame the story and answer the 5 W's and How. Although my son does not care for writing (has white page syndrome), Julie is teaching him (did I mention soooo patiently) how to develop the outline and fill in the details. If you're looking for a great reading/writing tutor who is extremely patient with stubborn resistant children, I highly recommend working with Julie.

Julie noticed that my daughter had a tendency watching the clock too often in the past 2 sessions. This time, Julie suggested covering the clocks. I think it help my daughter to concentrate her attentions to the subject. Julie was very patient working my daughter, who believed she was learning something new. Yesterday, 12/19, Julie showed my daughter a proper way to conduct a search using Google and how to pull contents and arrange the contents in a organized way. This is very important skill that she must learn. This lesson will help her a lot.
